Don’t assume a treat is healthy. Check the list of ingredients. If there are a bunch of words you don’t understand, ask your veterinarian for clarification. Generally, the shorter the list of familiar words the better!
Don’t assume all human food is good for your pet. In fact some foods are quite toxic or can cause a blockage, like chicken bones, onions, raisins/grapes, chocolate, and more. Talk with your veterinarian about your pet’s specific dietary needs and decide which snacks are the best fit to keep your pet healthy and happy. In an emergency situation you can always contact Poison Control or your veterinarian.
Don’t leave your pet unattended with a new treat (like me and cake!). Observe your best friend as they enjoy the treat to make sure it’s a perfect fit. Once you know your pet does well with the treat you will feel more confident.
Do find the appropriate treat for your pet. Size, ingredients, health or diet concerns, etc. All of these considerations matter! No matter the size of dog, you will want to find what works best for your pup.
Do consider calories. Keep in mind that some treats can be quite high in calories. A good rule of thumb is that treats should make up no more than 10% of your pet’s calories. Low-calorie treats are best. Just be sure to adjust Fido’s meals to account for treats given!
Do reward your pooch! Just-because or for training purposes, as long as it is balanced with a healthy diet.
