11 Fun Dog Facts
They sleep in your bed, they sit on the couch, and they kiss you on the mouth, but how much do you know about the four-legged carnivore living in your house? Dogs are some of the best friends to have, they give us love, companionship and are always there when we need them. There are plenty of things you know about your furry friend, but let us treat you with eleven tasty morsels of truth you may not already know.
DOGS ARE NOT COLORBLIND
Everything is not all black and white in your dog’s eyes, according to the AKC. They can actually see two colors: blue and yellow, plus a combination of these colors. A good way to help your dog out is to choose products that feature the colors they can see.
DOGS HAVE UNIQUE NOSE PRINTS
Just like a person’s fingerprint, a dog’s nose print is unique. Dogs can be identified by their nose prints, with each nose having a special pattern of ridges and creases. One company is testing a mobile app called NoseID to help track down your dog if they are ever lost. Users are invited to make a profile for their dog with scans of their dog’s nose. Although their dog noses are not similar, they are all just as boop-able.
DOGS DON’T SWEAT LIKE WE DO
In order to stay cool, dogs pant! They do not sweat like humans, so don’t expect them to need a sweatband when they go for a run. Dogs produce a pheromone laden oily substance that humans cannot detect. Dogs only sweat like us on their paws. It is vital that you keep them cool on hot, humid days! Some dogs like to lay in sploot position to cool their bellies.
DOGS HELP WITH MENTAL HEALTH
Dogs are pawfect for many reasons. Your physical and mental health can benefit from petting them. If you pet a dog for 15 minutes it can help lower blood pressure by 10%! Petting a dog can help lower feelings of stress, depression, and combat loneliness. So hold your fur-baby close and feel all those good vibes for your health!
DOGS HAVE 18 MUSCLES CONTROLLING THEIR EARS
Dog ears move around a lot, as you might notice! They have 18 muscles that move their ears. These muscles help them change the direction of their ears slightly to hear noises. Their ear movement also tells us how our fur baby is feeling! Dog’s ears are vital in helping them communicate with us and other dogs.
DOGS HAVE ABOUT 1,700 TASTEBUDS
Your fur-baby does not have as many taste buds as you! Humans have between 2,000–10,000 taste buds while dogs only have 1,700. This might explain why strange things are appetizing to your four-legged friend. Your taste is a lot more sensitive than your fur-babies.
YOUR DOG’S FEET MAY SMELL LIKE CORN
You might notice the faint scent of corn chips or popcorn lingering around your dog. This is referred to as “Frito feet,”. This phenomenon happens when sweat and bacteria build up in the paws. Next time you’re around your fur-baby, paws and smell their paws.
A WELL KNOWN BAND HAS A SONG WITH A DOG ONLY FREQUENCY
The popular, oldies group, the Beatles, sang “All You Need is Love” and what greater love than that of a furry friend? They also sang a song with a sound that only dogs can hear. Their song, "A Day in the Life” features a high-pitched dog whistle and the 15 kilohertz sound can be detected by canines but not us. Brush the dust of your record and see if your dog pays attention.
DOGS DO HAVE A SENSE OF TIME
When you’re gone for a while, your dog knows. Humans typically reference their own concept of time when trying to understand dogs' concept of time, but it's not the same. Dogs can tell a difference between 1 hour and 5 hours. Dogs tell time based on how much time has passed since an event occurred like how long since their last meal, their last Pup Corn Plus treat, or how long since their last walk.
DOGS SMELL YOUR FEELINGS
Your dog’s sense of smell is about 100,000 times better than yours! They can smell your feelings, especially fear. Body chemistry can change when you feel certain ways, like when you sweat or release endorphins. When you’re fearful, you might sweat and a dog can easily pick up on the change. Your dog can sense even the most sensitive of changes! Dogs smell the changes in your emotional state and mirror your emotions.
YOUR DOG PROTECTS THEMSELVES WHEN SLEEPING
When your dog sleeps, they often curl up in a ball. This position allows dogs to protect their organs and the technique is a holdover from their time in the wild when they were vulnerable to predator attacks. If a dog sleeps on their back around you, it could be a sign that they trust you completely.
